Bronze Watches and the Patina Obsession

Bronze cases oxidise. That isn't a defect — it's the point. Within weeks the case turns from polished penny to deep umber, and the pattern is unique to your skin chemistry and wear habits.

What "patina" actually means

A mix of copper oxides and sulphides forms a thin protective layer. The case never corrodes structurally; it just darkens. You can polish it back to factory finish — but no one does.

The pioneers

A few warnings

• The case-back is usually steel — bronze can irritate sensitive skin.
• Patina develops fastest in humid coastal climates.
• Crowns and pushers may show a different patina pattern than the case.
