Brand Stories
Kikuo Ibe dropped 200 prototypes off a balcony before getting it right.

In 1981, Casio engineer Kikuo Ibe sketched the "Triple 10" target: 10-year battery, 10 bar water resistance, survive a 10-metre drop. He spent two years and 200 prototypes failing.
The breakthrough came watching children bounce a rubber ball in a park — he realised the module needed to float inside the case, suspended by shock absorbers, not rigidly mounted. The DW-5000C launched April 1983 at $200.
US sales were slow. The 1990s skateboarding scene saved the brand — Tony Hawk, Bam Margera, every X-Games athlete wore one. Today G-Shock ships ~5 million units a year.
