Ceramic Watch Cases

Modern watch ceramic is zirconium oxide sintered at ~1,400°C. The result is harder than steel (Mohs 8.5 vs 5.5) and chemically inert.

Pros

• Virtually scratch-proof in daily wear.
• Hypoallergenic, no oxidation.
• Holds colour permanently — no fading.

Cons

• Brittle on hard impact. A 1-metre drop on tile can chip or shatter the case.
• Difficult to machine, so cases cost more than steel.
• Heat conductivity is poor — feels warm slowly on the wrist.

Rado, Omega, Hublot and Rolex Cerachrom bezels are the safest entries into ceramic.
