The chronograph is the most useful complication you can buy. At its heart, it's a stopwatch built into a wristwatch — but the dial layout, pusher feel, and movement type all change the experience.

Pusher feel matters more than you think

Quartz chronos have a soft electronic click. Mechanical chronos with a column-wheel feel crisper than ones using a cam-actuated design.

Three layouts to know

• Bi-compax — two sub-dials at 3 and 9. Cleanest look.
• Tri-compax — three sub-dials, the iconic "racing" layout.
• Mono-pusher — single pusher operates start/stop/reset. Vintage charm.

Strong first chronographs

• Seiko Speedtimer Solar (SSC) series — solar quartz, classic looks.
• Tissot PRS 516 Chronograph — Swiss quartz under ₹40K.
• Hamilton Intra-Matic Chronograph H — automatic with proper column wheel.
• Tag Heuer Formula 1 Chronograph — accessible Swiss racing DNA.

Avoid this mistake

Don't buy a chronograph just for the looks if you'll never use the pushers. A clean three-hander will age better.
