Proper Winder Usage

What is TPD

Turns Per Day. Most automatics need 600–800 TPD; some need 950+ (Panerai P-series).

Settings to check

• Direction: CW, CCW, or bidirectional. Wrong direction can wind nothing.
• TPD: under-winding leaves the watch stopped; over-winding wastes wear cycles.
• Rest periods: most winders should spin in bursts, not 24/7.

When NOT to use a winder

• Chronograph watches with running chronograph (wears the column wheel).
• Watches due for service (winder accelerates the failing components).
• Quartz watches (you don't need to).

For 1–2 automatics, you're probably better off hand-winding when needed.
