Storing Watches When Not in Use

A mechanical watch doesn't need a winder to stay healthy. What it needs is dry, dark, and dust-free storage.

The basics

• Dry — silica gel sachets in any box. Replace every 6 months.
• Dark — UV fades dials, especially blues and tropical browns.
• Stable temperature — avoid attics, balconies, and bathrooms.
• Dust-free — a soft lining and lid keeps grit off the crystal.

When to use a winder

• Complications that hate being stopped (perpetual calendar, moon phase).
• Daily-rotation collectors who don't want to reset multiple times.

For everyone else, a winder is optional — and over-winding accelerates wear on the keyless works.

A simple kit

• Single watch box from a quality brand (₹2,000–₹5,000).
• Two silica gel sachets per box.
• A microfibre cloth inside the lid.
